For the past 20 years, he has been at the cutting edge of the British music scene, championing bands such as Radiohead and The Verve, but Steve Lamacq believes we are now tuned out when it comes to homegrown music.
Speaking to the Independent on Sunday, Lamacq said: “I think we’ve had a bit of a history in Britain of ignoring our own music at times. It happened during grunge and again now.”
Lamacq puts this neglect down to an increasing obsession with the US music scene and the British media’s focus on US blogs to find out what’s being touted stateside.
“I think around places like Hull, Sheffield, York and further north, through Manchester and up to Scotland – I’m sure there are things going on, but the spotlight’s not being shone there,” said Lamacq, 47.
